JP0/WHM June 7, 1983 Duke Power Company McGuire Nuclear Station Response to IE Bulletin 83-03 1.
A review by Duke Power has shown that there are no check valves in the system that supplies raw cooling water to the diesel generators at McGuire Nuclear Station.
It has therefore been determined that IE Bulletin 83-03 does not apply to McGuire.
McGuire does have a separate system which cools the diesel generators.
This is the Diesel Generator Cooling Water System which is a chemically balanced, closed loop system. There is one Walworth check valve per diesel generator in this system.
At McGuire there is a full load, twenty-four hour test performed on the diesel generators and associated equipment every eighteen months.
There is also a surveillance test which is performed every thirty-one days for one hour.
The full load test has been performed twice on Unit 1 and once on Unit 2 with no cooling problems attributable to check valve failures. These tests ensure an adequate cooling water supply to the diesel generators.
If any system degradation occurs, such as valve failure, it would be detected during testing.
