Subject:
McGuire Nuclear Staticn, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 NRC Generic Letter 92-08, Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers
Dear Sir:
j By letter dated February 11, 1994, additional information was submitted to your office regarding our plans for resolving the technical issues concerning the Thermo-Lag fire barriers installed at McGuire Nuclear Station.
-As stated in our response to NRC Item II.B.1 and II.B.2 in the above communication, any verification effort of a preliminary list of important performance parameters prior to the publication of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) (formally NUMARC)
Application Guide may prove to be unnecessary or premature.
Our response to item VI of the above communication, stated that a schedule for important performance parameter information would be submitted to you no later that 30-days after receipt of the NEI Application Guide.
Additionally, the results of an Engineering evaluation would be made available within 90 days'after the receipt of the NEI final test reports and Application Guide.
The purpose of this Engineering evaluation was to determine if the Thermo-Lag fire barrier located in the Unit 1 Train B Switchgear Room was within the scope of the NEI program and if it could be brought into compliance with Appendix R specifications.
The NEI Application Guide and final three hours fire barrier test results were received on July 28, 1994.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission August 11, 1994 page 2 Although NEI fire test 2-10 was based on a similar, but not identical installation configuration, our Engineering staff has reviewed tha results of the tests and determined that the Thermo-Lag as installed in the Unit 1 Train B Swithchgear Room is within the scope of the NEI Applications Guide and that NEI fire tests indicate conclusively that the Thermo-Lag as installed at this site will not meet the three hour fire resistance requirements of Appendix R.
Furthermore, we have determined that upgrading the existing Thermo-Lag configuration to meet the requirements of a three hour fire barrier is not possible.
By letter dated June 24, 1994, your office was informed of our intention to forward a schedule concerning the corrective actions to be taken involving the Thermo-Lag fire barrier material used in the Unit 1 Auxiliary Building pipe chase and the Unit 2 Motor Driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump Room no later than December 1, 1994.
Please be advised that we will also forward to you no later than December 1, 1994, our planned course of action for achieving compliance with Appendix R requirements involving the use of Thermo-Lag fire barrier material in the Unit 1 Train B Swithchgear Room, thus consolidating the commitment dates for all three areas where Thermo-Lag is employed.
The target goal for the actions will be to alleviate our reliance on Thermo-Lag fire barrier material at this facility as completely and quickly as possible.
Based on the information contained in the NEI Application Guide and the conclusions of our Engineering Staff, we feel that further consideration of the important performance barriers will be of no value and the commitment dates from the February 11, 1994 letter have been met.
j Should there be any questions involving this matter, please contact John M. Washam (704) 875-4181.
Very truly yours,
/6Af/~t.
