Mr. James G. Keppler, Director U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 ULNRC-638
Dear Mr. Keppler:
FINAL REPORT, NO. U-54 10CFR50.55(e)/PART 21 ITT GRINNELL CONTAINMENT ISOLATION VALVES CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On May 16, 1983 Union Electric Co. reported a significant deficiency, per 10CFR50.55(e)/Part 21, to Mr. John Neisler, the NRC Resident Inspector.
This deficiency involved the failure of the closed limit switches to reset on containment isolation valves, HV-7126 and HV-7150.
This failure caused a " closed" indication.to be shown in the control room when the valves could ae in an open or partially open position.
Union Electric made a similiar report to Mr.
H. M. Westcott, U.S. NRC Region III, on May 17, 1983.
The corrective action implemented involved the installation of a compensating spring on the limit switch actuating arm.
The force from this spring allows the limit switch to reset when the valve is fully stroked.
No other analysis of safety implications has been made as the deficiency has been corrected in both cases described above.
This letter serves as our final report on this subject.
Very truly yours,
_L
