Subject:

McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 NRC Inspection Report No. 50-369, 370/91-18 V6olation 50-369,370/91-18-01 Change to Container Labeling Commitment Gentlemen:

i McGuiro Nuclear Station's response to violation 50-369, 370/91-18-01 dated September 13, 1991 concerned the labeling of storage boxes containing radioactivo material. The response indicated Station l'

Radiation Protection Manual 16.2 had been revised to require the posting of all sides of a container (open to the elements) with suf ficient yellow tags to assare identification per Radiation Protection Manuht Section 13.2. The tags used are made of paper and are taped to the container. The requirement for applying f

multiple tags ensured that if some of the tags were damaged or removed by weather, others would remain affixed to the container to identify the material as radioactive.

New tags are now being used at Oconee and Catawba Nuclear Stations that are designed with a peel off backing that secures the entire surface of the tag to the container, in addition, the tag has a clear ultra-violet peel off weather shicid that is secured over all written information on the front of the tag protecting the written information. Based on the success of using these tags at other locations, McGuire Nuclear Station is now using these tags, applying one tag per radioactive material container.

Should there be any questions concerning this matter, contact Dwin Caldwell at (704) 875-4328.

t Very Truly Yours,
