  • Feb. lk,~1983 SUPPLDU: ITAL TISTDONY OF PHYLLIS EEL 3RALi  ;
EKECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ROCKLAND COUNCIL FOR YOUNG CHILDRDI OH . BEHALF OF RCSE I am Phyllis Helbraun, Executive Director of the Rockland Council for Young Cnildren, a nen-profit agency, supported by the County of Rockland, Rockland Community College, New York State Division for Youth, and private con-tributions. We are a coordinating agency for. Day Care Centers, Nursery Schools, and Family Day Care Mothers. We have questioned 15 pre-schools within the 10 mile radius as to their ability to transport estaff and children to designated areas. We asked the following questions
1) How many children enrolled?

~

'2) How many stefft

3) Does t'be school own its own busest h) If yes, how many buses at school?
5) How many children use bust
6) Hov inany staff use bust
7) How many children driven by parents?

In the 15 schools surveyed, there are 1,5hl children enrolled and 218 staff members. Three schools own their own buses, two schools contract for them, sai the remaining ten depend on parent transportation. Of those owning their own buses, there are 22 at the schools, and they carry 550 children and 2h staff members. Apprrurimately 1.090 children are driven by parents. We can foresee the traffic problens created by the parents trying to reach the 1,000 children in these 15 schools. Bus drivers, under contract, cannot be relied upon to soARD OF DIRECTOR 5: Sheik Abreme=*e, fewish Community Center Nursery School e Pnyt//sarenson.Comenunity Play Group, Piermont e Dieen Asrpe, Vke hesWent, Community Play Group Deector e fewne Cky, Latchworth Chnic e Arkse Cinkscek,5uperlatendent, Nyack School District e Auth Dev&en, Nurse e serbere Defrench, vaney Cottage, Conumer e Dr. Allen finbekrain, Deaths e Toby Gersony, Ramaeuois Coun-try Day School e Maureen Meeerer, Rockland Community Conege e Herrkt Kestink Secretary, Licensed Famsy Day Care Mother e Roberse A Mental Hsaftt. report to the schools for the children they drive. This is a sampling.

N We have no,t ' surveyed every school within the 10 mile radius, nor every s

home where numbers of children are car'ed for.

e .

To our knowledge, the Indian Point Evacuation Plan does not deal with any of these problems.
