Dear Mr. McCracken:

Review of Data Developed to Support Sulfur Removal from the TMI'1 Reactor Coolant System Thank you for agreeing to participate in the review meeting at BMI-Columbus on February 10, 1983. Many of you attended an earlier meeting in August, 1982 where the TMI-l corrosion d.anage was discussed briefly; the results of some preliminary NiS-H 0;

. tion rate experiments were presented; 2

and where another set of expeiiments was outlined to explore the feasibility and safety of treating tht entire TMI-1 system with peroxide to remove residual sulfur compounds.

Since that time a contiderable amount of cleaning data has been generated and several corrosion tests have been carried out.

At this meeting this work will be presented and in-progress work discussed.

It is hoped that by the end of the day the group can arrive at a consensus as to:

(1) does the RCS system require cleaning, and (2) has sufficient experimental work been done to show that an effective and safe process has been developed.

So that you will be able to review some of the data ahead of time, a draf t of the BMI report on this work is attached. For those who did not attend the August meeting, I have also included a copy of the failure analysis report.

To accomplish this rather difficult task we have scheduled the meeting to begin promptly at 8:30 AM and to finish by 5:00 PM.

This will mean that most participants must come in Wednesday night. Again, the Holiday Inn at 328 West Lane Avenue (614/294-4848) is probably the most convenient place to stay.

I look forward to seeing you all again on the 10th.

If you have any ques-tions, or need more information, please call me at 412/788-1080.

Sincerely, lC)()l 7Zff.U m W W. R. Greenaw g OTSG Task 9 Manager O
