Dear Mr. Keppler:

On October 7, 1982, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(c). During the installation of the Unit 2 containment polar crane three welds between the end tie beam flange and the bottom p' ate, which is bolted to the saddle beam, had visible cracks. These cracks had the potential of adversely affecting the structural integrity of the crane. Therefore, the three cracked j welds were excavated and magnetic particle testing was performed on the excavated a eas to assure soundness of the base material.

No further crack propagation was detected. The areas were then rewelded and the welds found acceptable. There was one additional weld of similar configuration. Magnetic particle testing was performed on this weld and test results verified the weld to be acceptable.
