Serial No. 898 January 20, 1983 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. John F. Stolz Operating Reactor Branch No. 4 Division of Operating Reactors United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555

Dear Mr. Stolz:

On December 1, 1982 (Log No. 1144) you requested that Toledo Edison provide additional information on, among other items, redundant condensate storage tank level indication and low level alarms. Toledo Edison responded on December 15, 1982 as related to Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Unit No. 1.

This letter is to provide additional clarification concerning the Condensate Storage Tanks (CST's) as requested by your Mr. Al DeAgazio.

The CST's at Davis-Besse are cross-connected allowing either tank to act as a common suction water supply for the Auxiliary Feed Pumps. The cross-connect valve for each CST is locked open with administrative controls placed upon the keys. The effect of this arrangement is that the two CST's both supply water to the Auxiliary Feed Pumps and act together as one large tank. We trust this satisfies your concerns.

Very truly yours, f P%
