Final 10CFR50.55 (e) Report; Gould Class 1E Battery Cell Spacers

Dear Sir:

On March 25, 1983, a reportable 10CFR50.55(e) item was reported

[ Reference (b)] regarding the Gould Class lE Battery Cell Spacers.

The following information is provided per 10CFR50.55 (e) (3), and is considered to be the final report on this item.

During the review of the Gould Qualification Report for the Class lE Batteries, it was noted that a failure resulted during the initial seismic testing of the cells. This failure was attributed to the spacer material between cells. The open cell type spacer material was permanently defoned when compressed. The spacer material was changed to a closed cell polyethylene. The batteries were retested, and they pasa.d the seismic test.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFICIENCY:

Gould was requested to confirm that the cell spacer material supplied to Seabrook was the same type as used in the successful test. On March 9, 1982, Gould informed us that they could not confirm which material was supplied to Seab rook. We obtained samples of the spacer material from the site, and forwarded them to Gould on March 22, 1983, for their review and analysis.

Could confirmed that the open cell type material was supplied to Seabrook, and should be replaced with the qualified material.
