PUBLIC SERVICE INDIANA S. W. Shields senior Vd Presx3ent . October 15, 1982 Nucknar Division S82-14 SVP-0049-82 h . James G. Keppler, Docket Nos.: STN 50-546 Regional Administrator STN 50-547 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Construction Permit Nos.:

Region III CPPR - 170 799 Roosevelt Road CPrR - 1/1 Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Marble Hill Nuclear Generating Station - Units 1 and 2

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On June 10, 1982, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notifit.d your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). While refurbishing structural steel, it was discovered that several pieces of structural steel had been incorrectly fabricated. The deficiencies involved were out of tolerance edge distance, spacing, and size of bolts holes and -xcessive weld undercut. These deficiencies had not been discovered previously because they were concealed by connection attachments (clip angles) which had been recoved for refurbishing activities.

It was determined that bolt hole size, spacing and edge distance are only of concern for sliding type connections and not friction type connections. Weld undercut is a concern for both types of connections.

The steel erector has established procedures to inspect for these defici-encies and when necc.ssary, repair the remaining structural steel prior to its errction. The steel erector is also examining previously erected structural steel to dc ine if it is affected by these deficiences.

This letter is intended to fulfil . the requirements of an interim report as defined in 10 CFR 50.55(e). A further report will be filed on or before February 10, 1983.
