Docket No. STN 50-482

~ q g' Subj: Interim Potential 10CFR50.55 (e) Report -

L Ray Miller Corporation

Dear Mr. Seidle:

This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) item concerning material supplied to the Wolf Creek job site by the Ray Miller Corporation. This matter was initially reported by Mr. Earl Creel of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. William Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on February 18, 1983.

The specific problems associated with material supplied by the Ray Miller Corporation were documented in IE Information Notice 83-01.

As a result of information contained in the Notice and information from other sources, KG&E is in the Process of evaluating the potential of some of the suspect materials being used in safety-related applications at Wolf Creek. The evaluation thus far has revealed that eleven Non-Q purchase orders were issued to Ray Miller's Skokie, Illinois branch during the years of 1978, 1979 and 1980. Some of the material furnished came from their West Virginia branch. Some of the items furnished were accompanied by Certified Material Test Reports. Of these items, five two-inch flanges were received which have a heat number appearing on the log of acceptable heat numbers maintained at the Wolf Creek Site.

This heat number is on the list because safety-related flanges of the same size were purchased from Gulfalloy with this same heat number. Three of the five flanges in question have been located in Non-Q storage and placed on hold.

The status of KG&E's evaluation of this matter will be reported to you on or before July 15, 1983.

In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

Yours v'ery truly, 8303280226 830318 S
