Workmanship on Swagelok Fittings

]b'

Dear Mr. Seidle:

This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) item concerning workmanship on Swagelok Fittings at the Wolf Creek jobsite. This item was initially reported by Mr. Earl Creel of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. William Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Region IV) on February 15, 1983.

During a KG&E Quality Assurance surveillance of instrument tubing installation, two items were identified as potentially reportable pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e). One item concerned the proper assembly and tensioning of the fittings. Fitting installations were found in which the tube was not against the shoulder of the fitting, the ferrule was installed backwards, or the fitting was improperly tensioned. The second area of concern involved burrs found on several of the tube ends.

Although some othe'r items concerning workmanship were listed as findings in the surveillance report, these two were evaluated as potentially repor table.

Kansas Gas and Electric Company has not yet completed the evaluation of the safety implications of this matter. Regardless of the results of this evaluation, corrective actions have been taken to ensure craft personnel deburr and properly install the fittings.

The status of KG&E's evaluation of this subject will be reported to you on or before June 3, 1983.

In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this matter to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

8303250024 830317 Yours very truly, PDR ADOCK 05000482 GLK:bb
