Dear Sir:

Carolina Municipal Power Agency No. 3 for Shearon Harris Nuclear
{'q jD Power Plant, Units 1 & 2).
II 1 P I hereby petition to intervene in this hearing. Because
~.
I live and work in the town of Apex, which is seven miles from the Shearon Harris construction site, my interest will be affected in several ways,by the outcome of the procedings.
First, as a family physician in the community and the Director of Professional Services of Western Wake Hospital in Apex, the phys-ical and psychological health of my patients could be impaired by the operation of the Shearon Harris facility. In addition, I have a respons-ibility to ensure that emergency plans are adequate to deal with the treatment of workers who receive radiation injuries and with hospita.-
ized patients who might need to be evacuated.
In the event of a release of radioactive materials I would have to choose between leaving myself or staying to take care of my patients. Thus, in order to carry out the functions of my job responsibly I must observe and participate in the licensing procedings.
Second, I am planting a small commercial orchard which by 1985 will be producing fruit and consist of approximately 40 trees of various types and 3 acres of small fruits. The health of the trees may be in-fluenced by small amounts of radiation or by algacides such as chromium present in water evaporated from the cooling towers.
The, market value of these fruits, through public apprehension, could*IIe" damaged by the operation of the Shearon Harris facility.
In the eventikf' h large scale accident, my investment of ' S35,000 (land, trees, plants,, farm equipment, storage facilities, labor) ceuld be lost.
[
Third, because of the possibility of a large auclear accibent exists and because serious doubts have been raised in North Carolina about Caro-lina Power and Light Cmpany's comitment to nuclear safety (for example, i
in the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board hearings in Raleigh ih 1979),
my own health and safety may be affected by the operation of the Shearon i
Harris plant.
