Mr. D.M. Sternberg Chief, Reactor Projects Branch No. 1
Subject:
POTENTIAL 10CFR50.55(e) DEFICIENCY COMPRESSIBLE MATERIAL - EMBEDDED CONTAINMENT PENETRATIONS (D/N #44)
On September 21,'1982 the Supply System notified your office of a potential 10CFR50.55(e) deficiency concerning the omission of compressible material around containment penetrations 23, 24 and 44. The engineering evaluation of the subject deficiency per the criteria of 10CFR50.55(e) has not been completed.
Ebasco and Chicago Bridge and Iron are jointly performing an analysis of the deficiency and its safety implications and determining corrective actions. The evaluation of all but one load case has been completed for the three penetrations. To date the analysis has determined that the lack of compressible material around the inboard side of penetrations 23 and 24 will be acceptable.
A final or interim report will be submitted to your office by February 4, 1983. Should you have any questions or desire further information, please contact me directly.
