Dear Sir:
During the afternoon of Wednesday, October 6, 1982 the Dow TRIGA reactor was operated for a period of about one hour while the pump which is intended to pull air through the Eberline AMS-3 Continuous Air Monitor was not operating.
This instrument is required by the license to be operating while the reactor is operating.
The malfunction was detected during the daily shutdown procedure some 20 minutes after the completion of the reactor operation. The pump has since been repaired, the Continuous Air Monitor has been checked and found to be operating normally, and the reactor has been operated.
We believe that this malfunction did not cause the loss of any signi-ficant signals since: (a) the Area Monitor, also in the reactor room, did not clarm, and (b) the successful operation of the TRIGA reactor after repair of the pump did not indicate any leakage of airborne radioactive materials.
The Reactor Operations Committee will neet to consider possible changes of procedures or equipment which might help eliminate recurrence of this problem.
S1 O rely yours,
