IN THE MATTER OF 238 NUCLEAR ISLAND GENERAL ELECTRIC STANDARD SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT (GESSAR II); DOCKET N0. STN 50-447 Enclosed please find 3 original copies (transmitted under separate cover are 60 conformed copies) of Amendment No. 8 to the 238 General Electric Standard Safety Analysis Report (GESSAR II) for the above numbered application.
Amendment No. 8 further amends GESSAR II by furnishing responses to the following questions requested by Enclosure 1 to the Commission's GESSAR II acceptance review letter dated December 3,1981:

Geotechnical (Questions 241.1, 241.3-241.9, 241.11-241.14, 241.17-241.21, 241.23 and 241.24) l 2.
Radiation Sources (Question 471.2) 3.
Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (Questions 280.1, 410.3, 410.8, 420.3, 420.7 and 480.1).
Pursuant to the failure modes and effects analys.is (FMEA) of items 3 above, a total of 32 systems were identified as requiring FMEAs. This amendment provides FMEAs for 13 of these systems with another 12 desig-nated as " Applicant to provide." FMEAs for the remaining systems, listed below, are scheduled for submittal on December 15, 1982:

GENER AL $ ELECTRIC U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 Amendment No. 8 also amends GESSAR II by stating in Appendix 3B (Containment Loads) that the Applicant will address the NRC draft acceptance criteria for LOCA-related Mark III containment pool dynamic loads.
The TMI-related information on control room design reviews and plant safety parameter display consoles will be provided with the Chapter 18, Human Factors submittal currently scheduled for November 10, 1982.
Amendment 8 consists of two parts, a non proprietary portion and a portion considered by the General Electric Company to be proprietary.
The pages considered to be proprietary are so marked and are transmitted under separate cover.
We request that this proprietary information be withheld from public disclosure and be considered proprietary pursuant to Section 2.790 of 10CFR Part 2 for the reasons presented in the separate cover.
