Open Item Response:

(SRP 11.5.2; Ef fluent Treatment Systems Branch)

Dear Sir:

In response to the open item regarding the potential for an unmonitored discharge of the steam generator blowdown demineralizer regenerant solution, we of fer the following commitment:

The steam generator blowdown demineralizer may be regenerated. The regenerant solution is collected in the waste holdup sump. The present design allows the contents of the waste holdup sump to be discharged to either the Chemical Drain Treatment Tanks or the Water Treatment System Neutralization Tank.

A modification is presently underway which will eliminate the waste holdup sump discharge to the Neutralization Tank and, instead, allow the sump's contents to be discharged to the Liquid Waste System's Test Tank release header upstream of the header's radiation monitor.

Prior to discharging contents of the waste holdup sump, samples will be analyzed for radioactive contaminants.

Should sample results indicate that release rate would exceed 10CFR20, Appendix B limits, the contents of the sump will be discharged to the Chemical Drain Treatment Tanks for god 8302160166 830214 PDR ADOCK 05000443 A

Automatic termination of this discharge path is provided should the discharge activity exceed the setpoints determined by the Off-Site Dose Calculation Manual.

The above commitment will be incorporated in OL Application Amendment 49.
