i LAP-83-15 Carolina Power & Light Company FEB 11 1983 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. D. B. Vassallo, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 bivision of Licensing United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 NUREG-0737 ITEM II.D.3 SAFETY / RELIEF VALVE POSITION INDICATION EQUIPMENT

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

]

In a letter dated May 7, 1982, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) revised the schedule for completing the equipment qualification (EQ) testing for the installed safety / relief valve position indication equipment at the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP). The equipment qualification testing is being conducted for CP&L and two other utilities by Wyle Laboratories. During the testing a problem was incurred which resulted in the equipment not passing the post thermal aging functional test.

Additional testing was performed to determine the cause of and document the problem. Corrective actions were taken to eliminate the problem.

Due to the delays incurred by the logistics of restructuring the test program to incorporate corrective actions, CP&L was unable to complete the EQ testing by December 1982 as previously commited. As there is no apparent difference in the requirement for having environmentally qualified safety / relief valve position indication equipment and other environmentally qualified safety related electrical equipment, CP&L commits to complete NUREG-0737 Item II.D.3 by the final required date for having all safety

(

related electrical equipment environmentally qualified as required by 10CFR50.4 9.

Should you have any questions regarding this revised commitment, please contact a member of my staff.

Yours very truly, 7
