7 Under the provisions of the operating license Technical Specifications, NRC Region II was notified on 12-08-78 that a potential significant deficiency

existed at North Anna Power Station, Unit No.1.

In accordance with the reporting requirements of the above regulations, the following information is submitted:

Description of defect, deficiency, or failure to comply:

At the request of Vepco operating personnel, the Architect / Engineer (S & W Engineering Co.) compared the emergency diesel generator battery rack seismic design drawings and the manufacturer's installation drawings.

It was discover-ed that the wall mounts, the side rail supports and the bottom support rails were not installed according to seismic design drawings.

It was also discover-ed that a request to modify these components during construction had not been implemented.

Seismic calculations indicated that the bottom support rails will not yield, during a DBE;however, the wall mounts and the side rail supports will yield.

I The racks are similar but not identical to racks used on Unit 2 of the North Anna Power Station.

The battery rack wall mounts have been replaced by seismically approved l

mountings. Approved side rail supports are presently being fabricated and are

' tenatively scheduled for installation on or before December 15, 1978. Repre-l sentatives of Vepco, Colt Industries and Stone & Webster Engineering Co.

tentatively will inspect the battery rack for completion of the modifications on December 12, 1978.
