Docket No. 50-285

Dear Mr. Clark:

Removal of Steel Bucket from the Fort Calhoun Station Spent Fuel Pool (SFP)

Omaha Public Power District's letter dated August 18, 1982 transmitted a report regarding the accidental spill and cleanup of glycol in the Fort Calhour. Station SFP which occurred ir October,19E1.

A carbon steel bucket in the SFP, containing pieces of cut-up incore detectors, was identified in this report as being a contributing factor in the resultant turbidity of the pool due to its ferritic properties. The District stated this bucket would be removed from the SFP prior to commencement of the 1983 refueling outage, initially scheduled to start January 3, 1983. The purpose of this letter is to provide the Commission with a status update regarding our efforts to complete this project.

The District decided to convence the 1983 refueling outage approximately one month early due to main turbine cenerator problems which forced the plant to shutdown on December 3,1982.

The District has since attempted to unload the cut-up incores by transferring the contents of the carbon steel bucket into a non-ferritic container.

Completion of this procedure permits removal of the carbon steel bucket from the SFP and yet provides i

for continued storage of the incores.

During the District's attempts to unload the incores, it was determined that a special handling tool would be required to complete this transfer. This tool was recently fabricated; however, the personnel responsible for completing this SFP work are presently involved in critical path projects for the present refueling outage.

Therefore, based on the work schedules of these individuals, the District anticipates the carbon steel bucket can be removed from the SFP within one month following the completion of the present refueling outage.
