Cf8&L Carolina Power & Light Company JAN OG 1983 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN:

Mr. D. B.

Vassallo, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 UNDETECTED SINGLE FAILURE IN REACTOR PROTECTION SYSTEM POWER SUPPLIES

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

In response to Mr. T. A. Ippolito's letter dated August 7, 1978, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) committed to perform the requested surveillances on the Reactor Protection System power supplies described in of the August 7, 1978 letter until modifications were installed to correct the identified concern. Carolina Power & Light Company has completed the modification on Brunswick Unit No. 2 and has submitted proposed Technical Specification (TS) changes. Brunswick Unit No. 1 is currently in an extended refueling outage during which the modification will be installed.

Carolina Power & Light Company is currently performing both the surveillances identified in the Commission's model technical specification (as submitted in our TS change request for Unit No. 2 dated August 16, 1982) and those surveillances committed to in 1978.

Since the modification to correct the identified concern has been approved by the Commission, CP&L plans to no longer perform the additional surveillances commited to in 1978 after the modification has been declared operational on the applicable unit.

Carolina Power & Light will perform those surveillances which are identified in its proposed TS change request submittal dated August 16, 1982, commencing when the modification is declared operational on the applicable unit.

If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact our staff.

Yours very truly, 71 Inw S. R.
