Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 - HIGH PRESSURE FIRE PROTECTTnN ptwo FAILURES - NCR 962 - SECOND INTERIM REPORT

-~

Ihe 'subiect defi$ency was initially reported to NRC-OIE Region II Inspector R. W. Wright on May 2,1978, and an interim report was submitted on June 1, 1978.

TVA and the pump manufacturer (Johnson Pump Company) have redesigned the mechanism for locking the pump impeller to the pump shaf t.

The pumps are presently being sent back to the f actory, one at a time, to have this modification installed. After the modifications are complete, the pumps will be tested to determine whether or not the corrective action is adequate.

We vill submit our next report by November 3, 1978. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please get in touch with M. R. Wisenburg at FTS 854-2581.

Verytrulkyours, f
