' Beaver Valley Power Station
-Narrative Summary Of Operating Experience - September. 1978 Date Event
=
September 1 The station was shutdown in Operational Mode 5' throughout the month. Type C leak testing continued throughout the month. Other significant events occurring during the month are as follows:
i Sep*; ember 1, 2 The 1B Steam Generator eddy current test was successfully completed with no degradation discovered.
September 4 RCS ficw was lost for one hour when the operating RHR pump became air bound.
It was discovered that with the RCS loops drained to the pipe centerline and normal RER flow, air is entrained in the 4
coolant requiring pump venting each shif t.
A design change is being investigated to permit lower RHR flow when.the RCS is in this '
condition permitting less frequent venting.
I September 9-20 Sludge lancing of the secondary side of the 1A, 1B and 1C Steam Generators was completed. Approximately 10 gallons of sludge was j
removed from each generator.
The secondary side water chemistry i
(AVT) appears to be working quite well as attested to by the eddy current testing and the small amount of sludge discovered.
September 16-28 Inservice Inspection of safety-related pressure retaining components was conducted during this time.
The reactor vessel, I
charging and letdown filters and heat exchangers were omitted from j
the inspection and will be done during the refueling outage, i
September 25-30 The 18 month snubber inspection was begun. All containment snubbers were complete by September 30.
I j
Major Safety Related Maintenance - September,1978 1
l 1.
The 1A Charging Pump remained out of service for replacement throughout the
,(
entire month. Actual work on the pump began September 26.
2.
The 1A River Water Pump remained out of service.the entire month for impeller 4
j replacement.
- l i
3.
The following large bore snubbers were removed during September for testing and j
repair:
RC-HC-1C, 3C, SA, 6A and 8A.
i 4.
An investigation of the field flashing problems experienced with the diesel generators when the station main transformer malfunctioned in July and station power was lost continued. A design change is being formulated to add a remote switch to flash the field manually.

Major Safety Related Maintenance (continued) 5.
Miscellaneous safety-related valve repairs continued throughout the month.
6.
Removal, testing and replacement of ASME Code relief valves continued throughout the month.
7.
Testing of safety-related 4160 volt relays and control rod drive mechanism relays was performed throughout the month.
8.
Following the steam generator eddy current test, a leak on the primary side manway of the LA Steam Generator was repaired.
9.
Source Range Detector N31 was replaced during September due to erratic response.
