CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION REPORT NUMBER: SD 414/82-16 REPORT DATE:

September 2, 1982 FACILITY: Catawba Nuclear Station Unit 2 IDENTIFICATION OF DEFICIENCY:

Large Arc Strike located on the body of a Borg-Warner Corporation valve (Duke item 9J-220).

INITIAL REPORT:

On August 3, 1982, H. Dance, NRC Region 11 was notified of the subject deficiency by W. O. Henry, J. H. Lanier, M. Childers, and E. D. Lindsay of Duke Power Company, Charlotte, NC 28242.

COMPONENT AND/0R SUPPLIER:

The valve in question is a four inch, stainless steel, ASME Class 1, electric motor operated gate valve manufactured by Borg-Warner Corporation, Nuclear Valve Division (Duke item 9J-220).

DESCRIPTION OF DEFICIENCY:

During the cleaning process, before installation of valve, a large arc strike was discovered on the valve body. NCl 15136 indicated the arc strike was or valve when received at Catawba site. This arc strike was not detected during receiving inspection, because the area was covered by shipping materials.

The arc strike appears to be of significant depth.

ANALYSIS OF SAFETY IMPLICATIONS:

This valve was designated for active valve Safety injection System application 2Hil62A. Had this arc strike gone undetected and assuming failure of pressure boundary at arc strike area, safety injection flow could potentially be less than the requi red design value.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The deficient valve has been replaced by an equivalent valve of the same Duke item number. The valve in question is to be returned to Borg-Warner Corporation,

~

NVD for further investigation.

Upon completion of this investigation a follow-up report will be submitted to the NRC by December 1, 1982.
