422 SOUTH CHURCH STREET CIIAIUMPTE. N. C. 28242 August 12, 1982 Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Regional Administrator U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II 101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Re: Oconee Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-287
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On August 4,1982 your office was informed that five of the Reactor Coolant Pump closure studs were determined to be degraded in size below acceptable limits.
The studs involved are Nos. 18, 19, and 20 on RCP 3A2 and Nos. 7 and 8 on RCP 3A1.
This constitutes performance of c>mponents that requires remedial action to prevent operation in a manner less conservative than assumed in the accident analyses in the safety analysis report. Reportable Occurrence Report R0-287/82-09 providing details of this incident was to have been submitted to you by August 18, 1982, pursuant to Technical Specification 6.6.2.1.a(9).
However, the investiga-tion of this incident and the preparation of a report are incomplete at this I
time due to difficulties in removing the affected closure studs.
It is expected that the investigation and report will be completed, reviewed, and submitted to you by September 1, 1982.
Very truly yours, fd cM
