Dear Mr. 0hrig:

7 The U.S. Nuclear [ Regulatory Commission (NRC), Office of Nuclear Regulatoryw Research, has contracted with Mountain West Research Incorporated to undertake a series of post-licensing studies of nuclear power stations.

These studies will analyze the community and regional socioeconomic impacts which occurred during the construction and post-construction periods of each station.

St. Lucie Nuclear Plant Units 1 and 2 has been included in a sample of fourteen stations to be studied.

This contract is designed to provide infomation and tools of analysis which will improve and facilitate the treatment of socioeconcmic impacts in the NRC licensing of nuclear power plants.

It is our belief that this study will place the type, magnitude, and significance of socioeconomic impacts from nuclear power plant siting into a more useful perspective.

It should, thereby, be useful to conmunities located near the proposed si te for futura nuclear power plants as well as the NRC in meeting its responsibilities with regard to the National Enviromental Policy Act (NEPA)..

These studies will involve infcmation gathering in the communities surrounding each site. Only a limited amount of infomation, primarily el historical in nature, will be sought directly frcm the utilities.

Dr. James Chalmers of Mountain West Research will contact you wi thin the next several weeks to arrange a briefing on the objectives and design of this study as well as the type of infomation that will be sought from you.

~~

It is hoped that you can be of some assistance to the successful per-fomance of this study.
