MIDIAND NUCLEAR PIJd;T UHIT NO 1, DOCKET NO 50-329 UNIT NO 2, DOCKET NO 50-330 CLASS lE STATION BAWERY Exide Industrial Ecttery Division esde a report to the NRC in accordance with the requirements of Title 10 CFR, Part 21 concerning the need for an isolation bar to isolate, in two cell incretents, the buildup of horizontal momentum during a seismic event. The Attachment provides a copy of the Part 21 report.

This letter is an interim 50 55(e) report for the condition as it applies to Midland. Four Class 1E 125 volt station batteries (Material Requisition and Specification No 7220-E-12(Q); equipment numbers 1D01,1D02, 2D01, and 2D02) are involved. The present equipment status is ss follows:

a.

The battery racks for batteries 1D02 and 2D02 are in crates at the installation location at elevation 614 in the auxiliary building.

b.

The battery racks for batteries 1D01 and 2D01 are assembled but not installed at the installation location at elevation 614 in the auxiliary building.

The battery cells (60 per set) have been received and warehoused.

c.

Exide has been asked to provide additional information describing the condition, the failure mode of the battery rucks if the condition had not, been detected, an analysis which defines why the condition was reportable, and any cubsequent corrective actions taken or planned.

Corrective action has been initiated by Exide to add en isolation bar to each rock. The isolation bar is currently being designed by Exide and is expected to le available for retrofit by December 10, 1978.
