x Docket No.,:

50-416-and ~502417 Mr. N. L. Stampley Vice President - Production Mississippi Power & Light Company P. O. Box 1640 Jackson, Mississippi 39205

Dear Mr. Stampley:

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF CERTAIN PROPRIETARY GE0 LOGIC DATA (GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2)

In conversations recently among Drs. Stepp and Thomas of the NRC and Messrs. Dale and Killar of your staff, we inquired whether limited release of certain proprietary geologic data developed during the construction permit review of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station can be obtained. We learned that such release might be obtained by written request.

We request release of seismic Line No.11, Bechtel Corporation, Monette Area, Craighead County, Arkansas for incorporation with other data in scientific publications related to a study described herein. This line is part of the seismic reflection profile data which you submitted as an amendment to the Grand Gulf Preliminary Site Analysis Report submitted to the NRC on December 13, 1973.

Beginning in 1975 the NRC, in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and a number of State agencies, undertook a comprehensive geological investigation of the Upper Mississippi Embayment Seismic Zone. The study was undertaken in an effort to establish a generic position with respect to the extent of this zone.

(You may recall that questions concerning the southern extent of this seismic zone were a major element of our review of the Grand Gulf application at l

the construction permit phase.) The study has now reached the stage of development in which scientific publications will be prepared in 7811200b5G h l

l

Mr. N. L. Stampley NOV 9 878 the near future. To avoid duplication of work, we are requesting limited release of the proprietary status of the seismic reflection data to the extent of permitting the use and citation of Line No.11, identified above, in the studies of this area being conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey.

Sincerely, 24';!

Domenic B. Vassallo, Assistant Director for Light Water Reactors Division of Project Management cc:
