i OCNGS Sea Turtle Incidental Capture Report 93-1 l

l Octaber 17.1993 During the morning hours of Sunday, October 17, 1993, an Oyster Creek Huclear Generating Station (OCNGS) operator conducting a routine survey of the intake area noticed a sea turtle impinged against the dilution structure trash racks.

The turtle was I

carefully removed as quickly as possible (at 12:00 noon) and found

. i i

to be limp, immobile and with no apparent breathing.

OCNGS i

Environmental Controls personnel who took custody of the turtle confirmed it %o be a juvenile Kemp's Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys l

kempi).

The water temperature in the OCNGS intake canal at the time of the impingement was approximately 58'F (14.4'C) and OCNGS was in operation at full power.

Although it was impossible to say precisely how long the turtle had been on the intake structure prior to removal, it may have been between four and eight hours.

The turtle measured 10.25 in. (26.0 cm) carapace length straight line and weighed 6.7 lbs. (3.0 kg).

Sex was not determined.

No tags were present on the turtle when captured.

No prominent scars or slash-like propeller wounds were apparent on the turtle.

Minor scrape marks which were observed on the plastron may have occurred during removal of the turtle from the dilution intake area.

USNRC and NMFS personnel were notified of the capture at the earliest opportunity (10-18-93).

Within three to four hours after the time of its capture, the turtle was placed in a freezer for temporary storage at our on-site biological laboratory.

At the suggestion of HMFS, arrangements were made ta have a necropsy af the turt1e performed by sea turt1e expert Steven Morreale of Cornell University and his associates at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine.
