Dear ~Mr. Coe:

Subject:

NPDES Monitoring Report H

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, UnitJ1L The NPDES monitoring report for:SanLonofre Unit 1Lcovering thei month: of July is submitted in accordance with the 'requirementseof.,

CRWQCB Order 88-001 (NPDES Permit No.'CA0001228)'.. A summa'ryfof l

the generating unit's status andisignificant analytica1Tresults; is provided below.

The unit. continued its shutdown for refueling and:maintenancek All sampled. water' sources were found.to'be within: permit limits,L with the.following exceptions., The Unit 11 sewage treatmentiplant!

had low pH on' July.12, while'the Mesa. sewage treatment plantLhadL lot pH on July -27.

The Unit 1 pH depression-_in theLUnit 1 phut.

seems to be associated with the digester on the' south 1t' rain'.;;The-

. digester has been operating at low pH and.the supernatant l.

depresses the activated sludge'pHEand:the final effluentt A'

. combination of process-_ changes and chemical' treatment of.the-digester are being used.to,bringLthe 141 backLinto an acceptable range.

The Mesa plant ~pH'has!been corrected by using the. smaller process train.

The cause seemszto have been a reductioniin' flow,

'resulting;in long detention times and.pH reduction due'to-i,

}

nitrification.
