Dear Sir:

= Reference (a) requested that addressees determine whether certain mechanical plugs supplied by Westinghouse are installed in their steam generators, and if.'so, that an action plan be implemented to ensure'that these

,m plugs will continue to provide adequate assurance of reactor coolant system

'~

pressure boundary integrity.

Reference-(b)-presented the Commonwealth Edison Company (CECO)' response for Byron, Braidwood and Zion Stations.

In that response CECO, indicated that Zion Station would perform remedial actions on L_

the steam generator.not leg plugs fabricated from suspect heats during the l-~

.next refueling outage for_each unit.

CECO's remedial actions: consist of I

removal, examination (on'a sample basis) and replacement of the plugs fabricated from suspect heats.

+

As indicated in Reference (b), remedial actions'for the 27 hot leg plugs'from suspect heats (all from heat 4523) were scheduled to begin during i

the Spring 1990 refueling outage far Zion Unit 2.

These plugs have been removed from the Unit 2 steam generators and were replaced with Combustion Engineering rolled mechanical plugs or welded plugs, as appropriate.

The E

. mechanical plugs were fabricated from Inconel-690 material.

All 27 hot leg-plugs were removed using_the " Stretch-and-Pull" method.

These plugs from heat 4523 were to have been examined on a sample basis for primary water stress corrosion cracking (PHSCC).

However, correspondence from'Hestinghouse Electric Company has informed CECO that they require.no additional plugs for metallurgical examination from the suspect heats.

Therefore, no examination of Unit 2 hot leg plugs will be performed, 9008200070 900313 i

will be-provided to Hestinghouse Electric Corporation for analysis.

This response fulfills the reporting requirements of Bulletin 89-01
