I wish to thank the Advisory Comittee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) for its prompt response to the Chairman concerning the issuance of the preapplication l

safety evaluation report (PSER) for the Power Reactor Innovative Small Module (PRISM) liquid-metal design. The review approach and criteria used by the i

staff were directed toward meeting the guidance in the Commission's Advanced l

Reactor Policy statement.

In reviewing the PRISM design, the staff used and built on applicable existing regulations and guidelines and developed i

l additional criteria as required to address the unique characteristics of this l

design.

1 The staff will continue to keep the ACRS informed of any changes in staff or preapplicant positions, as well as any significant developments or changes in the design and the implementation of the key policy issues for advanced reactors.
