Subject:

AlcGuire Nuclear Station Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. 50-369, 370 Catawba Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-413 Use of ASME Section IX Code Cases 2142 and 2143 Gentlemen:

The purpose of this letter is to request approval in accordance with 10CFR 50.55a(aX3), to use the alternative rules of ASME Section IX Code Cases 2142 and 2143 (W92-33 and W92-34) in lieu of the currently required welding materials. The use of weld filler materials most like Alloy 690 in composition is necessary in the .

fabrication and installation of the AicGuire (Units 1 & 2) and Catawba (Unit 1) l Nuclear Station replacement steam generators. These materials have been approved by ASAIE through Code Cases 2142 and 2143 and are designated as UNS N06052 j and UNS W86152, respectively.

l ASAIE appreved the use of then Ni-Cr-Fe welding materials on December 7,1992, and classified the materials as F-No.43 for weld procedure and performance qualification purposes. UNS W86152 is the matching Shielded Afetal Arc Welding (SAIAW) electrode for Alloy 690 and UNS N06052 is the companion bare filler metal.

The materials have been shown in EPRI studies to have superior corrosion resistance '

weldments when compared to the currently used Ni-Cr-Fe materials, N06082 and W86182. These new weld materials are the preferred choice for welding applications and _ provide an acceptable level of quality and safety because of their superior corrosion resistant properties.

The fabrication schedule for the AicGuire and Catawba replacement steam generators requires the use of these weld materials in June 1993. Duke Power Company requests approval for the use of Code Cases 2142 and 2143 by June 1,1993.
