Dear Mr Keppler:

MONTICELLO NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT AEC Docket No. (0-263 Valve Wall Thickness Verification This letter is to advise you that the Valve Wall Thickness Verification Program for our Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant has been completed in accordance with the criteria established by Nr B H Grier's letter of June 29, 1972.

In our November 3,1972 letter we stated that our program would include approximately 72 valves. Since then the scope of our program was increased to 98 valves.

These valves were examined during our 1973 refueling outage and a subsequent plant outage.

The wall thickness of all 98 valves were found to satisfy their service requirements. There were only two valves whose measured minimum wall thickness did not exceed their design values, but based on their documented mechanical characteristics of the material, their wall thicknesses were determined to be adequate. These wall thickness deficiencies were more than adequately compensated by their actual tensile and yield strengths which exceeded the minimum specified by the ASTM standard for the* valve body material.

Therefore the data obtained from the Valve Wall Thickness Program verified the adequacy of the wall thickness of valve bodies within Monticello's Reactor Coolant Pressure Boundary. The evaluation and inspection data of our program is on file at our Monticello Plant and we would be happy to review it with your inspectors during any of their site visits.

Yours very truly, y
