Dear Dr. Long:

l

SUBJECT:

THREE MILE ISLAND CORK SEAM (TAC NO. M69115 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION) l The staf f has reviewed GPU Nuclear Corporation (GPUN) letter (C312-93-2074) dated November 12, 1993.

The letter provides preliminary information regarding the Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) cork seam that was contaminated as a result of the March 28, 1979 accident.

The staff has identified the need for additional information, particularly with regard to GPUN activities to accurately characterize the contamination. Also, the staff needs details on the plans for removing the contaminated water and eliminating future water intrusion into the TMI-2 buildings that contain the contaminated cork seam.

The enclosure contains the specific request for information.

The staff requests a response to our request for additional information by December 10, 1993, so as to not adversely impact the schedule for the approval for the Post Defueling Monitored Storage License Amendment.

This request affects nine or fewer respondents and, therefore, is not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under Public Law 96-511.

If you i

have any questions regarding this review, please contact me at (301) 504-1191.

Sincerely, i
