Subject:
Catawba Nuclear Station Dockets Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 Commitment Date Extension Enforcement Action 93-054 In Duke Power Company's response to Enforcement Action 93-054, dated May 27, 1993, concerning the failure of the 30 i.nch Basic-In-Flow (BIF) butterfly valves use as nuclear service water pump discharge valves to open, it was stated that additional testing of the removed valve would be done to attempt to identify the root cause of the higher than normal torque requirements.
The original completion date for this commitment was October 1, 1993.
r To date, the test plan has been developed, strain gages have been installed and calibrated, baseline running loads have been obtained, test fixture designed, and fixture fabrication has begun.
Outstanding actions necessary to complete this commitment include completion of fixture machining, assembly of test fixture, preparation of data acquisition system, testing, and analysis of res*
- s.
Due to the valve si:
,! geometry, 30 inch butterfly, and the high loads involved (7a,000 lbs.), the test fixture design and f abrication has become more complex than initially anticipated.
Also, the upcoming outage will impact the availability of test i
facilities, equipment and manpower.
- Likewise, we are revising the completion date for this commitment.
The testing and data analysis will be completed by January 27, 1994.
Very truly yours, D.
