OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONE R Taylor ^
MEMORANDUM FOR:
James M.
Executive Director for Operations FROM:
Kenneth C.
Rogers
SUBJECT:
SECY-93-110, STATUS OF IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR CLOSURE OF SEVERE ACCIDENT ISSUES, STATUS OF THE INDIVIDUAL PLANT EXAMINATIONS AND STATUS OF SEVERE ACCIDENT RESEARCH Having recently reviewed this paper for the second time, I join Commissioner Remick in commending the staff for their efforts on the above issues and offer some observations and comments that came to mind.
On Page 4 of the paper, you indicate that BNL is developing a computerized database to capture plant specific information from the IPE submittals.
It will store information about plant design and plant risk profiles so as to support detailed inquiries into the re]ationship between them for classes of plants. That should prove to be invaluable for gaining additional risk insights such as severe accident susceptibility as a function of design features.
This type of information could prove to be useful in the staff's evaluation of the new advanced light water reactor designs.
Please advise me if and how the staff intends to factor the BNL IPE database into the ALWR evaluations.
In line with the above comment, to what extent have the ALWR design reviews utilized the performance findings of AEOD?
