NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-498/93-27; 50-499/93-27
This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. L. E. Ellershaw, and the
inspectors identified in the enclosed t-eport, of this office on August 23-27,
1993. The inspection included a revice of activities authorized for your
South Texas Project Electric Generating Station, Units 1.and 2, facility. At
the conclusion of the inspection, th's. findings were discussed with you and
those members of your staff identifici in the enclosed report.
Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. These
,
areas dealt with the effectiveness of your program for assuring the
reliability and operability of safety-related check. valves. Within these
areas, the inspection consisted of selective exami.ntions of procedures ar.d
!
representative records, and interviews with personnel. The results of this
inspection are documented on page 2, in the enclosed report.

Although no violations were identified as a result of this inspection effort,
we are concerned with the quality and effectiveness.of your program.
j
Consequently, we request that you respond in writing to the negative
l
inspection findings listed in the Results section of the enclosed inspection
,
report. These negative findings were specifically discussed with your Senior

-Licensing Engineer on September 13, 1993. Your Deputy Manager of Licensing
committed on September 14, 1993, to provide a response within 60 days of-

receipt of this letter.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of
this letter and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
