UNC Naval Products Additional Remediation and Survey Information Incinerator Pad Area 1.0 Introduction UNC performed remediation of the incinerator pad area at the UNC Naval Products site and reported the final survey results to the NRC in the " Final Site Decontamination Report" dated March 12,.

1993, transmitted by letter NIS-93-03-11 dated March 15, 1993.

On 5/17/93 ORISE was on site to perform final confirmatory soil I

l analyses in the incinerator pad area.

On 6/10/93 an ORISE representative informed UNC that preliminary analysis results forwarded to NRC Region I identified one sample with elevated levels of uranium.

UNC located this sample, which had been marked with a flag by ORIS E, at the top of the hillside north of i

i the incinerator pad between sample points El and F1.

Figure 1, i

which is a duplicate of Figure G-2.2.5 in the referenced report, is used for continuity to locate this elevated sample.

l 2.0 Remediation and Surveys UNC remediated the area identified by ORISE and then conducted additional gamma surveys over the two 10m X 10m grids shown in Figure 2.

One elevated reading was found approximately half way between El and E2.

That area was remediated and resampled.

One of the follow-up soil analyses was elevated at 160 pCi/ gram and is identified as " Dredging N East" (NE side due south of an old pipe in the hill used for pumping of dredging materials prior to UNC's site ownership).

As a result of finding these two identified areas with elevated uranium levels, UNC chose to conduct an additional systematic soil sampling survey within the two ten meter grids as shown in Figure 3.

Designated core sample points were selected to fall between previous corings already analyzed and showing acceptable results.

The new survey resulted in an additional 33 corings taken, each down to approximately two feet in depth.

This provided a tighter pattern, creating sample points equidistant between the original triangular grid point core sample pattern within these two 10m X 10m grids.

Analysis results for this work are presented in Figures 4, 5 and 6.

This data has been transferred to Figure 3.

All results were acceptable to the NRC's soil release criteria.

Figure 7 shows three soil analyses identified as ORAU East, URAU West and ORAU North.

These results represent final data following remediation of the area containing the ORAU hot spot.

Figure 7 also shows three soil analyses identified as Dredging W est, Dredging South and Dredging N East.

These results represent data following remediation of the UNC hot spot.

Additional remediation was done within the Dredging N East area and the final follow-up soil analysis data is presented in Figure 8.

Figure 9 presents final soil analyses taken from two locations, EC and GG, reported in Figure 5 and 6, respectively.

Although these locations met NRC release criteria, UNC conservatively performed additional remediation and resampling due to the high statistical uncertainty associated with the initial results.

3.0 Su rvey Findinas/Comoliance Criteria As discussed above and presented in the attached figures, the incinerator pad area now meets all applicable NRC requirements for release for unrestricted use.
