Office of State Programs FROM:

Ralph S. Heyer, State and Governmental Affairs Staff

SUBJECT:

REPORT AND STAFF EVALUATION OF THE NEW MEXICO RADIATION CONTROL PROGRAM FOR THE PERIOD OF APRIL 12, 1985 - SEPTEMBER 15, 1985 4

Enclosed is the subject report and staff evaluation.

As noted in the report, the staff believes that the New Mexico radiation control program is adequate to protect the public health and safety. Due to the lack of up-to-date radiation control regulations, a finding of compatibility with NRC's program for the regulation of similar materials was not c'fered.

Program indicators identified during the review were " Status of Regulations,"

" Staffing Level," " Staff Continuity" and " Inspection Reports." During the next scheduled review the status should be determined with regard to the sanitary sewage sampling program utilized by the RCP.

Based on the results of this review meeting, the staff recommends that the next routine review meeting be conducted in 12-18 months.
