{
FROM:
Robert J. Doda, Chief, State and Governmental Affairs Staff, Region IV l
SUBJECT:
REPORT AND STAFF EVALUATION - NEW MEXICO RADIATION CONTROL PROGRAM e
Enclosed is the subject report and staff evaluation.
The staff was unable to make an initial finding concerning the adequacy and compatibility of the New Mexico radiation control program due to significant problems in three program areas with Category I indicators.
These were Status of Inspection Program, Inspection Frequency, and Status of Inspection Program in the mill area.
The State responded satisfactorily to these comments in a
~r letter dated June 3, 1985, and a finding of adequacy and compatibility was i
transmitted to the State on July 22, 1985.
Other comments and recommendations were developed during the review regarding i
i the State's inspection program, inspection reports, staffing level, and other program activities. Also, as a followup item, it should be confirmed during r
the next program review that NRC receives draft regulations as early as interested members of the public receive them.
Based on the results of this review meeting, the staff recommends that the next routine review meeting be conducted in 12-18 months.
