This letter refers to the announced inspection intended to promote public health and safety

conducted by Mr. R. A. McBrearty of this office from July 26 to July 30,1993, at the

Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, Forked River, New Jersey. Mr. McBrearty

discussed the fmdings with Mr. S. Ixvin and others of your staff at the conclusion of the

inspection.

This inspection was directed toward the activities relative to the long-term crosion/ corrosion

monitoring program, as accomplished in accordance with Generic letter 89-08 and licensee

I

commitments and procedures. The mitigation of erosion / corrosion in high energy piping is

important to maintain pressure boundary component integrity.

The inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records,

i

interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector. The erosion / corrosion program

and its implementation were determined to be generally good. The recent decision to

,

separate the Oyster Creek and Three Mile Island erosion / corrosion program responsibilities

by adding a staff engineer to the program at the corporate level, and the use of the EPRI

,
