Dear Sirs:

We informed you by a letter dated March 2, 1992, that the Department of Energy had funded the safety analysis phase of conversion of the University of Wisconsin Nuclear Reactor core to LEU.

The two-year effort to prepare safety analysis data and submit a safety analysis for the refuelling was begun in August 1992, with completion expected by August 15, 1994. The Department of Energy contracting officer has informed us that funding for the second year of the effort is not now available, but that DOE hopes to make the funding available on January 1, 1994. Although the DOE contract is expected to be extended, without additional funding, until the end of calendar year 1993, the lack of funding will delay completion of the safety analysis for at least four months.
