O May 20, 1993 0 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Commissioner Rogers FROM:

James M. Taylor Executive Director for Operations

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO YOUR LETTER OF MAY 5, 1993, CONCERNING CORE DEBRIS C00 LABILITY FOR ADVANCED LIGHT-WATER REACTORS We agree that the staff should analyze the depth of core melt penetration as well as gaseous reactant products for the advanced light-water reactors (ALWRs). To accomplish this, the staff has initiated contracts with the national. labs to analyze the affect of core concrete interaction on i

containment performance by using NRC computer models, such as MELCOR. The results of these analyses will be documented in the final safety evaluation j

reports for the particular designs.

Combustion Engineering and General Elec'tric have performed such analyses using the industry's computer model MAAP. We would expect these results to show that the containment can maintain'its role as a reliable, leak-tight barrier for approximately 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
following the onset of core damage.

It is the J

staff's intention to perform sensitivity studies and assess these analyses during the performance of the above mentioned contract.
