July 30, 1993 Docket Nos. 50-413 Mr. David L. Rehn Vice President, Catawba Site Duke Power Company 4800 Concord Road York, South Carolina 29745

Dear Mr. Rehn:

SUBJECT:

CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 - SAFETY EVALUATION REGARDING STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INTERIM PLUGGING CRITERIA MID-CYCLE INSPECTION (TAC NO. M86116)

By letters dated March 25, April 8, 21, 22, and 29, 1993, Duke Power Company submitted technical information intended to support continued operation of the Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit 1, for the remainder of fuel Cycle 7.

A mid-cycle steam generator tube inspection had been required by the NRC staff as a result of the implementation of an interim steam generator tube repair criteria during the previous refueling outage. This requirement was discussed in the Safety Evaluation accompanying the issuance of License Amendment No. 102 on September 25, 1992. The NRC staff has completed its review of the material referenced above and has found that the operation of Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit 1, for the remainder of fuel Cycle 7 to be acceptable. A copy of the staff's Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
