Docket Nos. 50-325 and 50-324 Mr. R. A. Anderson, Vice President Carolina Power & Light Company Brunswick Nuclear Project Post Office Box 10429 i

Southport, North Carolina 28461

Dear Mr. Anderson:

SUBJECT:

REVISION OF FIRE PROTECTION COMMITMENT REGARDING CABLE ACCESS WAYS -

BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. M86710 AND M86711)

In a letter dated March 9,1993, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) proposed a revision to a Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units I and 2 (BSEP),

fire protection program commitment.

Specifically, CP&L proposed to downgrade

~

the three-hour rated masonry block walls in each u:11t's control building cable access ways (fire areas CB-1 and CB-2) to non-rated walls. The downgrading of the block walls would allcw the removal of the rated fire doors presently installed in these walls.

Removal of these doors would provide a vent path to stabilize pressure across the block walls during a tornado event.

The NRC staff has reviewed the information provided and finds that,_ based on the alternative shutdown capability, the interior masonry walls may be downgraded to non-fire rated.

Our Safety Evaluation on this review is enclosed.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 301-504-1457.

L Sincerely, i
