Dear Mr. Hairston:
SUBJECT:
CLOSE0VT OF GENERIC LETTER 89 19. " REQUEST FOR ACTION RELATED TO I
RESOLUTION OF UNRESOLVED SAFETY ISSUE A.47 ' SAFETY IMPLICATION OF CONTROL SYSTEMS IN LWR N'JCLEAR POWER PLANTS' PURSUANT TO 10 CFR 50.54(f)," FOR Tile V0GTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT (VEGP),
i UNITS 1 AND 2 (T1.CS 75014/75015) i On September 20, 1989, the NRC staff issued Generic letter (GL) 89 19 which recommendedthatlicenseesprovidesteamgenerator(SG)overfillprotection for PWRs and automatic reactor vessel overfill protection for BWRs.
Specifically, for '.destinghouse designed PWRs, GL 89 19 recommended automatic SG overfill protection to mitigate main feedwater overfeed events.
Your response of March 15, 1990 (ELV.01375) concluded that the VEGP SG overfill protection features meet the " Group I" plant criteria for acceptable designs described in Enclosure 2 to GL 89 19. Your response also stated that the current VEGP plant procedures and Technical Specifications ensure that the operability of the VEGP SG overfill features are periodically verified. Your response adequately addresses GL 89 19 and provides sufficient basis for closure of NRR's review of this matter. Any further NRC action will be pursued through the inspection or audit process.
1 Sincerely, 1
A/
