Dear Mr. Denton:

At the request of the NRC Staff, Duke Power Company submitted on April 23, 1982 its environmental consequence analysis of a liquid pathway release of a core-melt accident (Q240.4, Environmental Report). In addition, as a followup to an August 11, 1981 meeting with the Staff, Duke is herewith providing information concerning operation of underdrain system sump pumps in the case of an accident.

The underdrain system siep pumps provide for continuous dewatering of the Category I groundwater drainage system, pumping directly to the yard drainage system.

Duke Power comits to providing in the Catawba Nuclear Station Emergency Procedures appropriate instructions to require the operators to secure the sump pumps in cases of accidents which show indication of core degradation. These procedures will assure that potentially contaminated groundwater in the underdrain system cannot be pumped to Lake Wylie.

This information will be formally integrated into a future revision of the Environmental Report.
