Dear Mr. Seidle :
The purpose of this letter is to provide a status report on the potentially loose stud / nut combinations in the diesel generators at Wolf Creek Generating Station. This potential problem was reported to Region IV of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on June 14, 1982 by Kansas Gas and Electric Company.
The stud / nut combination in question holds the generator spider to the generator shaft. The potential problem was discovered when Colt Industries performed a recheck of rotor to spider fastener torque values on a Beloit Power Systems generator to verify op-eration of newly designed tooling for field use.
The check revealed one fastener was not loaded at all, and three others were only 13%
tight based on prescribed torque values. Since it is possible that other generators may have improperly torqued stud / nut combinations, Beloit submitted a 10CFR21 Report. Diesel generators at Wolf Creek Generating Station were listed as potentially affected.
The Architect / Engineer is developing a rework plan for inspecting and retorquing the stud / nut combinations in question. Upon completion of the rework, an evaluation will be made to determine the report-ability of this matter under the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e).
The status of the inspection and evaluation will be reported to you
