Dear Mr. Mahr:

HDenton/ECase DEisenhut/RPurple Your letter dated June 13, 1982 to the Chairman of the Nuclear Regula-tory Commission has been referred to this office for issuance of a reply.

In February,1976, prior to issuing a Construction Permit, the Nuclear Regulatory Corraission issued a Safety Evaluation Report (SER-CP)(copy enclosed) detailing the firidings of a review of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) relate'd to the Washington Public Power Supply System Huclear Plant Unit 3 (WNP-3).

In SER-CP Section 2.5.2.3, the staff reports the maximum acceleration for which the plant is designed would be caused by an estimated maximum earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 centered on the Olympia Fault 22 miles northeast of the site.

The recently tendered operating license application and Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) is being reviewed for completion.

If the staff finds the FSAR sufficiently complete, it will be accepted and the de-talled safety review will begin. The results of this review will be reported in an SER.

~

Copies of the PSAR, the SER-CP, and the FSAR have been forwarded to the local public document room at the W.H. Abel Memorial Library,125 Main Street, South, Montesano, Washington, to be made available for public review.

Thank you for your expression' of interest in the WNP-3 project.

I trust this reply is responsive to your concerns.

Sincerely, original situd h1 H. R. Denton J Harold R. Denton, Director.
